History

Rose quartz beads dating back to 7000 BC have been found in the area once known as Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq). Rose quartz jewelry was known to be crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 BC. The Assyrians, along with the Romans, might have been the first to use this stone.Called the Heart Stone, Rose Quartz may have been used as a love token as early as 600 B.C. and is still an important talisman of relationships.

Prized in the ancient world for its powers of physical beautification, facial masks of Rose Quartz have been recovered from Egyptian tombs, thought by the Egyptians and Romans to clear the complexion and prevent wrinkles. It was also a stone honored by the Tibetan and Oriental cultures, and continues to be one of the major carving stones of China. People in the earliest recorded times believed in the magical powers of quartz. Ancient Roman, Egyptian, and Greek civilizations used quartz crystals as potent talismans. The Romans used rose quartz as a seal to signify ownership, and Egyptians believed the stone could prevent aging.

In the Middle Ages, medical practitioners used quartz in their healing potions. Early cultures of the Americas used quartz amulets. Known as the “love stone,” it was said to balance the emotions and to heal anger and disappointment.

Most rose quartz is found near the core of pegmatites. It is found in anhedral masses, meaning unusual massive or lump forms. Rose quartz crystals have been found in Minas Gervais, in southeast Brazil, but crystals are very rare. Rose quartz is actually the only variety of quartz that is not found abundantly in crystal form. Most rose quartz is mined in Minas Gervais, Brazil, Pala, California, and Maine. The most highly prized specimen are mined in Antsirabe, in central Madagascar. Other occurrences are in Vama, Nuristan, in northeast Afghanistan; Quadeviile, Renfrew County, in Ontario, Canada, and the Bavarian Forest in southern Germany. In the United States, rose quartz has been found in Fremont County, Colorado, Oxford County, Connecticut and Grafton, New Hampshire. Rose quartz can also be found in various other locations around India, Madagascar, South Africa, and Japan.

A silicon dioxide crystal, Rose Quartz is one of the most common varieties of the Quartz family. It is found in abundance around the world and occurs only in massive form, with no crystal faces, edges or terminations. It is found in translucent masses made of intergrown anhedral crystals. It is hazy to translucent, and is usually found in the cores of granite pegmatites. Its name is derived from its soft rose color, which ranges from very pale pink to deep reddish-pink, sometimes blueish and is due to trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese in the massive material. Irradiation may cause the formation of smoky quartz color centers and add a gray tone. It also contains microscopic fiber inclusions of rutile or a borosilicate similar to dumortierite that can occasionally produce a cat’s eye or “star” effect when polished into cabochons or spheres. style=\"margin: 0px 0px 16px; line-height: normal;\">The color of the fibrous mineral as well as the color of rose quartz is stable up to temperatures of about 575°C (Lehmann and Bambauer, 1978; Goreva et al, 2001) and is also generally stable in ultraviolet light (Goreva et al, 2001), although there have been occasional reports of material that pales quickly in daylight.

Rose quartz is dichroic, reflecting a preferential orientation of the included fibers. Rose quartz from some localities shows asterism when cut as spheres or cabochons, much like that seen in certain sapphires. It is sometimes called star rose quartz. The six-rayed star is caused by reflections of the light from embedded fibers that intersect at an angle of 60°. The star\'s position depends both on the location of the light source and the position of the observer (Schmetzer and Krzemnicki, 2006; Killingback, 2008).
