SEFERINA ORTIZ COCHITI PUEBLO OWL POTTERY FIGURE VINTAGE TUCSON ESTATE:
$224.99

From a Casas Adobes estate in Tucson is this unsigned Seferina Ortiz Cochiti pottery owl. While lacking the signing, the artwork exhibits every bit of the specific imagery and visual charm typically associated with owls by Ortiz - a Pueblo matriarch whose distinctive figurative efforts (as this example) were especially noteworthy. To be clear, this owl is unarguably by Seferina Ortiz.  There is an old trader notation "$5.50" pencil inscribed to bottom, a telling indication of how long ago it was crafted. Seferina Ortiz (1931-2007), the daughter of Laurencita Herrera,  is considered one of the most important Cochiti potters of the 20th century. Her work is included in many important museum and private collections - there are 32 pieces at the Peabody Museum alone. Years ago, when Berta Wright's fabled gallery was a must visit destination here in the Old Pueblo, three Cochiti storyteller artisans were always on display - Helen Cordero, Dorothy Trujillo, and Seferina Ortiz. Condition is quite fine with a nice aura of time to the well preserved pigment details and surfaces. The beak is still exactly as made. There are a just the usual few tiny pinpoint temper spalls to the wings as normal for Pueblo pottery - no chips or cracks or any other debilitating issues to mention for accuracy, and no hidden restorations.  I'm actually nitpicking for the obsessive, and a look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size is about 5 in. vertical to the top of the "horns" - for a great presence wherever placed. If you are drawn to Pueblo figurative imagery, or simply wish a single immediate improvement to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you.
