This medal is 1 inch long, and the one in the pictures isthe one you will receive. Sent in to us this week, from one of the Carmeliteconvnets we work, with is this beautiful Spanish Colonial rosary medal that is1 inch long, and has a weight of 4 grams. We know the dating because a year agoa small catch of similar medals was discovered at another Carmelite Conventsand all were sold.

Saint Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa ofJesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada (28 March 1515 – 4October 1582), was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelitenun, author during the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplativelife through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and isconsidered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of theCross. Saint John of the Cross, O.C.D. (Spanish: San Juan de la Cruz; 24 June1542 – 14 December 1591), was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, aSpanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest who wasborn at Fontiveros, Old Castile.

John of the Cross was a reformer of the Carmelite Orderand is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of theDiscalced Carmelites. He is also known for his writings. Both his poetry andhis studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mysticalSpanish literature and one of the peaks of all Spanish literature. He wascanonized as a saint in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. He is one of the thirty-sixDoctors of the Church.

This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.
