Salt Lake City c 1880 ZCMI Zions Cooperative Mercantile UT Photo-Lith Trade Card:
$125.00

ca. 1880 - \"Zion\'s Co-operative Mercantile Institution ... Salt Lake City.\" ZCMI Building Photo-Lith. / Photo View Card - GREAT Condition: Antique Card, minor flaws; please study scans.
Approx. 4.75 x 3 inches - From series (circa 1880) issued by: \"Frank Cousins\' Bee-Hive\" -- see far below.

This is NOT a \"Real Photo\" per se ... but rather an authentic 1800\'s hand-drawn lithograph from a photo image.Authentic 19th Century \"Photo-View\" / \"Photo-Lithograph\" cards like this one were based upon actual photographs;
lithographers transferred the photo images to lith stones or plates, often taking slight \"liberties\" in the process...... perhaps removing a distracting object, or adding people (who are often disproportionately sized).This photo lith is nearly identical to a known c 1880 photo, but NOTE: sidewalk people are bigger than the horse!19th Century Photo-Lith images are historically important and can be as detailed and rare as period photographs.
Zion\'s Co-operative Mercantile / ZCMI LANDMARK: 15 South Main St., Salt Lake City.
CARD: circa 1880 storefront photo view, printed via lithography as an Advertising Card issued by Frank Cousins.This RARE card image appears to be a litho adaptation from a cabinet photo created and distributed by F. I. Monsen,Artistic Landscape Photographers of Salt Lake City. NOTE: to the right is Studebaker Bros. Wagon Mfg. building.
NOTE: This is an early view of the ZCMI façade, before it was replaced in the 1880\'s with a \'modern\' cast iron version.
The original Eagle Emporium is seen as the left half of this building, with only one wing addition at the time of photo.Wikipedia: \"Zion\'s Co-operative Mercantile Institution (typically referred to as ZCMI) was a departmentstore chain founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 9, 1868 by Brigham Young.For many years, ZCMI used the slogan, \"America\'s First Department Store.\"
\"The LDS Church purchased and transformed the Salt Lake City Eagle Emporium, a conglomerate of mercantile companies owned by William Jennings. ZCMI became a formidable business force, eventually manufacturing its own line of boots and shoes, and a line of work clothes. It also sold everything from housing needs, lumber, nails, and the like, to household needs such as fabric, needles, thread, food preservation products, furniture, and draperies, even some beauty products; nearly everything the pioneers needed to survive and thrive. The Mormon / LDS Church was a significant influence in the company, retaining a majority interest in ZCMI until its eventual sale in December 1999.\"\"Frank Cousins\' Bee-Hive, Salem.\" Advertising imprinted on the margin above the ZCMI building.Thearchitectural photographer Frank Cousins was relentless in assembling and publishing photos of important buildings.Cousins\' Salem, Mass., \"Bee-Hive\" store was noted for its huge sales inventory of photographs, printed cards, books, etc.Countless 1880\'s advertising cards were issued by Cousins, but his photo-lith trade cards featuring buildings are RARE.Wikipedia: \"Frank Cousins (photographer) worked as a young man in the dry goods store, J.B. & S.D. Shepard. Cousins and his brothers opened their own general store at 170-174 Essex Street in Salem in 1868. His brothers passed away and Cousins continued to run the store, calling it Frank Cousins Bee Hive.\" As his business became more successful he was able to indulge in his interests in studying New England architecture through writing and photography.
Over the course of his life, Frank Cousins took tens of thousands of images and sold them at his store and to more specific audiences (architects, publishers, libraries) through his business \"Frank Cousins Art Company.\"
