Sing Sing Correctional Famous Criminals, Huge Double-Folio 1880s Antique Print :
$129.95

You are offerding on a huge original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal. It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately23 x16 inches (58.5 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. There is a partial 28-inch article on Sing Sing on the back.

It depicts five views of the prison and the \"jobs\" of four famous criminals incarcerated there in the 1880s -- Ferdinand De Wilton Ward, Jr., Henry Jaehne, Buddensiek and McQuade. In the center is a view of a convict greeting his wife and daughter.

At the time of this print, SIng SIng was notorious for giving famous (rich) convicts an easy life, and the general prison populace a difficult existence. I found referencesthat Ward and Jaehneworked less than four hours a week (compared to 60), had carpeted rooms with lamps and reading materials. Jaehne was even reported tohave two pet dogs, liquor and private poker games.

Ferdinand De Wilton Ward, Jr. (1851–1925), known first as the \"Young Napoleon of Finance,\"[1] and subsequently as \"the Best-Hated Man in the United States,\" was an American swindler. Ward caused the financial ruin of many people, including many famous people such as Thomas Nast and the former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped him start his banking business. As a young man Ward moved to New York City and in 1880 established the banking and brokerage firm Grant & Ward with investments from Ulysses S. \"Buck\" Grant, Jr., the son of the President, and from the President himself. Ward ran the company as a Ponzi scheme. The scheme collapsed in 1884, bankrupting Ulysses S. Grant. Ward served over six years in New York State\'s Sing Sing Prison for fraud.

Buddensiek was involved in building fraud, building substandard tenement houses that fell.

Henry Jaehne was a diamond setter who entered politics and eventually became a vice president of New York;s Board of Aldermen. He became the infamouse Boodle Alderman, after his conviction for bibery in awarding of streetcar contracts by the city.

Sing Sing was the fifth prison built by New York State, completed in 1828.

The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. The fold line is clean. However, there areabout8small pinhead holes along the fold line from where itwassewn into the journal long ago. See scan for an accurate view of the condition.

This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
