On 15 March 1991 President George Bush established the United States Southwest Asia Service Medal to be awarded to any member of the Armed Forces serving in the Middle East during operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 2 August 1990 to a date yet to be determined. A bronze battle star is authorized for each of the following time periods:

2 August 1990 to 16 January 1991

17 January 1991 to 11 April 1992
