Superb c1790s English Mahogany Knife Box Chest w Inlay, Original Slotted Insert:
$600.00

Presented is an excellent antique English mahogany knife box, dating to circa 1770-1810. The box is beautifully constructed and has a rich warm finish to the exterior with attractive inlay designs on the front, forming a fluted column type of design on either side. The interior of the lid features a wonderful inlay design of a six point nautical type star inside a diamond border. The box has a very distinctive shape, with a sloping lid and curved in corners on the front. The interior of the box has the slotted insert for knives, which is done in the same rich wood with inlay decoration around the edges and between all the slots, all original. The interior has green felt which is clean and in good shape, presumably having been replaced at some point. The brass hardware (handles, lock, hinges) are all original. We do not have the key to this box.

This piece is in great overall condition, particularly for the age. The lid sits a little crooker, but the latch still closes well. There are some losses to the veneer: Some to the edge of the lid, interior, not visible with the lid closed; one loss and a little buckling to the rim, interior; some buckling along the vertical corner of the back righthand side; some small losses to the decorative inlay edging of the back lefthand side and top back edge. The inlay inside the lid and on the front are all in great shape. There are some lines in the veneer of the exterior of the lid which are original to the piece but have likely grown more pronounced with age. Please view all photos carefully as they are part of the description.

The box measures about 9 1/2 inches wide x 9 1/8 inches deep x 13 1/2 inches tall.
