The first part of the book contains information about the various companies formed in the county, along with the military operations that took place there. It also contains information about life at home during this trying time. The second part of the book contains extracts of Confederate Business and Citizens Records, giving the names of those who sold supplies to the government, or provided services (labor, etc.). The third part of the book contains the names and military records of the many Confederate soldiers from Alleghany County, as well as the records of those who moved to the county after the war.

Among the records are the names of the militia members and those who served in the Provost Guard. This information is, I believe, published here for the first time.
