No replicas.Three-Toed Horse Miohippus,genusof extincthorsesthat originated inNorth Americaduring the LateEocene Epoch(37.2–33.9 million years ago).Miohippusevolved from the earlier genusMesohippus; however, the former was larger and had a more-derived dentition than the latter. The number of toes inMiohippuswas reduced to three, which enabled it to runfaster than its five-toed ancestors.Miohippuspersisted into theMiocene Epoch(23–5.3 million years ago) side by side with its more horse like one-toed relatives. Parahippus(\"near tohorse\"), is an extinctequid, a relative of modern horses,assesandzebras. It lived from 24 to 17 million years ago, during theMioceneepoch.It was very similar toMiohippus, but slightly larger. Their fossils have been found in North America, primarily in theGreat Plains regionandFlorida. Since leafy food had become scarce, these animals were forced to subsist on the newly evolvedgrassesthat were by now taking over the plains, and their teeth adapted accordingly. The extramolarcrest that was variable inMiohippusbecame permanent inParahippus.
