EXHIBITION STADIUM

Exhibition Stadium was a multi-purpose venue located in Toronto, Ontario, that served as the first home of the Toronto Blue Jays, Major League Baseball\'s first Canadian team. Opened in 1959, the stadium was part of the larger Exhibition Place complex and was originally constructed to host events for the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), hence its name. It had a unique horseshoe shape, with one open end, and a capacity of around 33,000 for baseball, though it could accommodate more for other events.

The Toronto Blue Jays began playing at Exhibition Stadium when they joined the Major Leagues in 1977. The stadium is remembered for the Blue Jays\' first game, which took place amid snow flurries—a fitting start to the team\'s history given the open-air design and unpredictable weather conditions. Despite its challenges, Exhibition Stadium saw the Blue Jays\' early years, including their first American League East division title in 1985.

Exhibition Stadium also hosted other sports teams, most notably the Toronto Argonauts, a Canadian Football League (CFL) team. The Argonauts played at the stadium from 1959 until 1988, using its versatile layout for football games. The stadium\'s proximity to Lake Ontario sometimes led to unpredictable weather, earning it a reputation for wind and other challenging conditions.

In addition to sports, Exhibition Stadium was used for concerts and other large-scale events. It hosted performances by some of the biggest names in music, including Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The stadium\'s role as a multi-purpose venue made it a central part of Toronto\'s cultural landscape during its years of operation.

Exhibition Stadium was eventually closed and demolished in 1999, with the Blue Jays moving to the then-newly constructed SkyDome (now Rogers Centre), a modern stadium with a retractable roof. Despite its closure, Exhibition Stadium is remembered as a significant venue in Toronto\'s history, having played a key role in the development of the city\'s sports and entertainment scenes.
