The US Army was slow to adopt modern rifles after the Civil War, and only in 1892 was the first effective repeating rifle, the Krag-Jorgensen, taken into service. Known simply as \"the Krag\", it was the mainstay of the US Army in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection that followed. This US Army USMC Marine SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR .30-40 KRAG BAYONET is in fair condition, with the blade having been \"cold blued\" at some point in the ca. 1970s, some light sharpening to the blade edge, heavy, heavy pitting at the upper right side of the blade, moderate pitting at the upper left side of the blade, the top false edge, and the upper blade spine, some scattered cleaning, scratching, pitting, and patina to the rest of the blade, moderate cleaning, scratching, pitting, and spot patina to the guard and pommel, a very small spot indent at the upper right handle scale, a spot indent at the lower right handle scale, a small area of chipping at the upper inner edge of the right handle scale, a few scattered small nicks and some scattered darkening to the handle scales, and with moderate overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the bayonet is in fair shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features an 11 5/8\" spearpoint fullered blade with a top false edge, sports elegant walnut handle scales secured by two metal rivets (denoting the bayonet was arsenal reconditioned in ca. 1900-1903), and is marked at the ricasso with the very scarce first year date, \"1894\"; it\'s believed only 750 or so 1894 dated Krag bayonets were ever made. It\'s \"US\" stamped with serifs at the reverse ricasso, boasts a fully functional \"locking lug\" attachment at the pommel, and is complete with an original US Spanish-American War Krag Metal Scabbard in fair condition, with heavy overall pitting and patina, missing the small, second securing pin from the belt hanger swivel at the upper back, allowing the belt hanger to incorrectly rotate a full 360 degrees, and with moderate overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fine shape, with absolutely no dents, cracking, or other damage. Most interestingly, it bears the original, early \"Type II\" swivel belt hanger at the upper back, carries the familiar \"ball\" end tip, and post-dates the bayonet by a few years, likely being produced in ca. 1896. The set is an honest example of a very rare, original US Army USMC Marine SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR .30-40 KRAG BAYONET. We have shown a photo of an old, elegant painting of a young US Marine in the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century with a similar bayonet mounted on his Krag.
