By the early 20th century, it was recognized that cavalry sabers were more effective as thrusting rather than cutting weapons, and that was reflected in the designs of all the major powers. Before gaining fame as a WW2 tank general, Lieutenant George S. Patton competed in the 1912 Olympics in pistol shooting, fencing, and equestrian events, all the necessary skills of a cavalryman. \"Old Blood and Guts\" personally designed the M-1913 \"Patton\" saber, and it was the last Cavalry saber ever issued by the US Army. This US Army WW1 CAVALRY SPRINGFIELD ARMORY FIRST YEAR M-1913 PATTON SABER is in good condition, with heavy chipping to the blade edges, heavy cleaning, scratching, pitting, and patina at each side of the blade, moderate patina to the guard, tang, back strap, handle scale screws, and pommel screw, a small area of chipping at the upper outer and lower inner left handle scale,some light \"whitening\" to the right handle scale,and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the saber is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features a 35 3/8\" bright spearpoint slim thrusting blade with a central fuller for almost its entire length, sports the classic sweeping metal \"basket\" hilt, and is marked at the ricasso with its maker, \"SA\" (the famous Springfield Armory), the traditional \"flaming bomb\" acceptance stamp of the Ordnance Department, and the scarce first year of manufacture date, \"1913\". It\'s \"US\" marked at the reverse ricasso, along with the early 4 digit serial number \"7629\", boasts the original checkered dark brown bakelite handle scales, checkered metal back strap with thumb rest, and steel \"bumper\" pad at the blade/guard join, and is complete with the original US Army WW1 Cavalry M-1913 Patton Saber Khaki Canvas Covered Wood Scabbard in very good condition, having lost all of the \"grip\" from the throat,meaning the scabbard will fall if the saber is held point down by just the handle, and with moderate patina to the end tip, some brownish soiling at the lower front body above the end tip, 4 small surface tears around the lower body,some scattered \"browning\", darkening, and brownish/dark spot soiling to the body,a small spot dent in the back right throat, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fine shape, with absolutely no cracking or other damage. Most interestingly, it bears the original OD finished metal reinforced throat with hanging rings, exhibits the matching OD finished metal reinforced end tip, and the set is a fine example of a very rare, originalUS Army WW1 CAVALRY SPRINGFIELD ARMORY FIRST YEAR M-1913 PATTON SABER.
