This US M1878 original canteen is a rare, named canteen that most likely served in Cuba in the Spanish American War. Writing is faint, but you can make out Co E USVE (Company E US Volunteer Engineers). Also written on the back is H. B. Jackson. Company E of the 2nd USVE was recruited in Chicago, Illinois, and H.B. Jackson is listed as a private on the rolls of Company E (spanishamericanwar.com). Companies A-H did serve in Cuba and were there through the cessation of hostilities. The canteen is used, of course, so it will show signs of use, fading, and stains. Writing is faint but legible. The strap does have a tear on it, but it is still intact. Cork appears to be in good condition. A great piece of Spanish American War history! Great period display piece or museum piece!
