by O.P.CO. SYRACUSE China Made in U.S.A.

During World War II, theOnondaga Pottery Company (O.P. Co.), which later became known asSyracuse China, played a significant role in wartime production. The company was originally located in Syracuse, New York,

SYRACUSE, along with other fine china makers such as Homer Laughlin, Tepco, Buffalo, Sterling, Mayer, Jackson, Walker, and Shenango, produced complete tableware for the U.S. Navy’s Officer Corps from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s1. This “Navy China” was extensively used during WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and beyond. The pieces included fine China plates, bowls, cups, and saucers, each glazed with special rank insignia (or topmarks) representing different officer ranks within the Navy.

Here are some examples of the rank-specific topmarks used on U.S. Navy china:

Junior Grade Officer (Ensign/LtJG): The topmark displayed a “Navy Square Knot.”

Wardroom Officer (Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander): The topmark included a “Fouled Anchor

Senior Officer (1946- 1959): Limited production topmark with "USN" beneath a Fouled Anchor.

Navy Captain: The topmark showed a "Commissioning Pennant with 4 stars.

Please check the internet for a full list.

Good used condition with some signs of use and storage (mostly on the bottom). One has a couple flecks of blue glaze and the other has a fine factory glazed over chip.

The sale is for both plates.
