***about iconography: Patrul Rinpochedescribes it thus: "With his right hand he holds a five-pronged goldenvajra at his heart. In his left hand he holds a skull-cup brimming withnectar, containing the vase of longevity that is also filled with thenectar of deathless wisdom and ornamented on top by a wish-fulfillingtree. Cradled in his left arm he holds the three-pointed khatvanga(trident) symbolizing the Princess consort (Mandarava). Its three pointsrepresent the essence, nature and compassionate energy (ngowo, rangshyin and tukjé). Below these three prongs are three severed heads, dry, fresh and rotten, symbolizing the three kayas (kayas can bedescribed as "different facets of the enlightened mind). On his head hewears a lotus hat and on his body he wears a silk cloak, Dharma robesand gown. His two feet are in the royal posture.

***about Padmasambhava, his life and history: Padmasambhava,an emanation of the Buddha Amitaba, was a great yogi from the regionthat borders on present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan. He broughtBuddhism to Tibet in the eighth century and is affectionately calledGuru Rinpoche. He spent more than 55 years in Tibet, manifestingcountless wonders and is highly revered by all the schools of TibetanBuddhism, and especially by the Nyingma.

Guru Padmasambhava gave teachings andtransmission of the Vajrayana to hundreds of disciples. His mainstudents, The Twenty Five Disciples, are the root incarnations of themasters of this day. With his principle disciple, Yeshe Tsogyal, heconcealed thousands of hidden teachings or Termas in many places for thebenefit of future generations.

Some termas are discovered within themindstream of realized disciples, and are revealed when most appropriatefor the times. In this way each successive generation of students isable to make a new beginning with a fresh revelation that is suited toits particular needs and capacities. Similarly, the distance from theBuddha to the practitioner is very short when a revelation is fresh anddirect and there is no possibility of loss or corruption in the line oftransmission. Through the Terma tradition the Nyingma school has beenable to stay in close and continual contact with the spirit, energy andinspiration of Guru Rinpoche.

Historical background of Padmasambhava, Guru Rinpoche's life and times

Fromaround 640 to 842 CE, Tibet was in a phase of expansion during which itabsorbed the state of Zhang-zhung, and then substantial Chinese,Nepalese and other territories surrounding it. It was near the end ofthis period, that under royal patronage, the first Tibetan Buddhistmonastery was founded at Sam'ye.According to legend, localdeities and demons opposed to the introduction of Buddhism, destroyedevery at night what was being built during the day. Therefore, the kingconsulted Santarakshita, the Indian monastic who was going to bethe first abbot of the new monastery. His advice was that the tantricmahasiddha (great adept) Padmasambhava be summoned from India (?)totame local deities and bind them to the service of Buddha-dharma.

It isPadmasambhava's journey through the Tibetan landscape during which hesubdues and binds a succession of named deities at specific places thatis at the core of accounts of his life. These events, mythical, legendary or historical have consequences for practitioners of TibetanBuddhism today since they determine the way in which these beings areperceived and treated, in visualization, the making of representationsand in other practices.

That is the most important aspect of his work, and the reason why he is referred to as Guru Rinpoche, being regarded as the "second Buddha." As a consequence, he is oftenconsidered the most important siddha or accomplished yogi, and he is thecentral figure in the lineages that continue to preserve and transmitthe siddha tradition.
