VTG 1930s/1940s Skookum Native American Indian Doll
The first skookum dolls were apple head dolls handmade by a non-native woman named Mary McAboy in Missoula, Montana. In 1913, McAboy obtained a US patent for a brave-style doll & the skookum name with the motto “Bully Good” were registered as a trademark in 1919.
The dolls were so popular by 1920 that mass production was taken over by the Arrow Novelty Company—using composition heads with painted facial features, including of course that impressive Skookum sideglance.
This 1930s/40s Skookum doll is in good shape for its age with a small hole in the front of its slightly worn blanket and a few bald spots in the hair—as shown.
