I have four of these Zook pieces. This same figure appears throughout the E. Rosen, Rosbro, Tico lines, as all different styles. One of the styles (sorry I don't remember which one) has "Zook" written on his hat. Thus, all of these figures that are this style have come to be called "Zooks". The designs for all these pieces were shared among the companies, and sometimes with other companies, as well - Sears, Royalite and others. The majority of figures and candy containers from these 3 companies using these designs date to the late 1940's, early 1950s.
The E. Rosen Candy Company started business in 1911. They were good at merchandising, and always used extras to help the sale of their candy. In the early years, they made cardboard valentines that had loops for adding a lollipop. When the Styrene craze came about, they jumped in and bought two companies, that were run as wholly owned subsidiaries - Rosbro and Tico. Styrene is hard plastic. It becomes brittle over time, so it's becoming hard to find these pieces in good condition. Inspect what you buy carefully - I always seem to find breaks. I always list all the flaws I find!
This one is an evil clown Zook painted with yellow & red accents, wearing a red hat. Actually, the evil clown figures were based on an earlier clown, Punch from the 1800s. All of the 4 piece that I have are in different colors, but all on green and yellow carts with wheels. This fellow will look excellent for any holiday !
There is a small rectangular opening at the fellows waist where his hand is, on his right hand side. I have shown a photo with a lollipop, not included. (Unless you really want one). The lollipop is new - I rather like lollipops!
I only found minor age related flaws in this one (and the others). There is a bit of age discoloration and scrapes to his paint, and of course, some discoloration along the glue lines. Companies, in the 1950's didn't use acid free glue! His hat is slightly faded.
