This is the nicest big Valentine that I have ever had. You will NOT be disappointed in this beauty. I just LOVE this piece. It is huge - a whopping 17 inches long, and in immaculate condition. AND It is in it\'s original box, which says \"HH The High-Grade Line of Valentines\" on the end of the box. The box is covered in shaded pale blue paper, and is also in remarkable condition. The top \"bows\" a little bit, and one end of the top has a split on the corner. There is wear to the seams on the box. The interior is bright and clean with it\'s original tissue paper and paper lace. The edges of the violin Valentine are sharp (it\'s all completely celluloid over the little cardboard violin) so have damaged the paper lace inside the box. It was apparently a very cherished gift that was carefully put away and saved. FOR years! Lots of years. The piece dates to around 1910.
The \"strings\" of the violin are woven cord. The celluloid is translucent and fairly thick. The celluloid is molded into shape; the edges are molded to look ruffled. Celluloid was really popular for greetings at the turn of the 20th century (1900). I have seen a lot of holy cards made from this same type of celluloid.
