I am not 100% sure this is a Chippewa Indian doll but my family has a history in Chippewa Valley and I believe that is the likely connection!
We are pleased to offer this Skookum Indian Doll with Papoose. Label on bottom of foot says \"Skookum (Bully Good) IndianRegistered Patented Trade Mark\". I believe doll was made in the 1930s to 1940s. This doll does not come with the original box. The doll stands well on its own without a doll stand. Most of the dolls like this one are looking to the right. Both dolls have lovely faces with dark eyes and closed mouths, each has black hair and are in overall nice shape with some wear for being close to 100 or so years old. These dolls did not have arms or hands, as they were always wrapped in felt blankets such as Pendleton blankets or Navajo blankets. The dolls were costumed in stylized garb of many different tribes, including the Pueblo, the Sioux, the Apache and the Chippewa. Reference also tells me the method of determining the production date of the dolls is by studying the footwear. For example, the earliest dolls from around 1913 had mocasins made of leather. By 1918, the mocassins were simulated with suede applied to wood, and painted designs. By 1924, they were molded of composition material, and by the 1950s, the dolls had plastic feet.[6] Production of the dolls ended in the early 1960s. I have taken plenty of photos.
