Vintage Antique Etched Glass Compote Bowl Vase Manganese EUC πŸ’œ

This lovely piece is in in great condition. No chip or cracks. I took close up pictures of the glass to show you the bubbles inside the glass, from when the piece was manufactured. This piece is etched and has a floral design. It measures approximately 6.75” tall and 7.25” wide at the top. The color has started to change from clear to a very light purple, which happens to glass that was made with manganese. Very pretty antique. We will package with extra care for safe delivery to you! πŸ’œπŸ’œ

History of Manganese Glass

Manganese has a long history in the production of colored glass. The use of manganese in glassmaking can be traced back thousands of years.

One of the earliest instances of manganese being used to color glass can be found in the Roman period. Manganese dioxide, a compound containing manganese, was utilized by the Romans to create glass in various shades of purple and violet. The addition of manganese dioxide to the glass mixture helped achieve these desired colors.

Fast forward to the Victorian era in the late 19th century, and we see a resurgence in the use of manganese in glassware. Manganese was particularly popular during this period for creating amethyst-colored glass. The addition of manganese oxide to the glass batch gave a beautiful purple hue to the finished glass products.

Furthermore, during the Art Nouveau movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, manganese was also employed to produce unique and vibrant glass pieces. Art Nouveau glassmakers embraced organic forms and innovative color schemes, and the addition of manganese helped achieve desired color effects in their creations.

Manganese’s use in glassmaking has continued throughout history, with variations in techniques, styles, and preferences. It has provided glassmakers with a way to introduce striking colors and enhance the aesthetic appeal of their glassware. In modern times, while other coloring agents may be more prevalent, manganese still finds its occasional application in glass production. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ
