• Description: This is very heavy cast brass nutcracker. This nutcracker has very well done raised images of William Shakespeare design on the exterior of both handles. He is reading a book on one side with the dates 1564-1616 (birth and death years) below and his head on the other side with a house below and the dates 1564-1616 above. The nutcracker opens to reveal two curved portion depressions below the hinge on the inside. One for smaller nuts and the other for larger nuts. The cracker is marked CBF ENGLAND on the inside. The handles are in the shape of columns with decorated top and bottom. The piece shows nice age patina but also shows remnants of cleaning agent where someone had attempted to clean it in the past. Very nice , substantial and nicely decorated vintage piece. The piece is made of two halves held together with a pin. • Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900s.
• Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in southeastern Pennsylvania. Made in England
• Size: The piece measures ~5" long, is ~7/8" at its widest, and ~1" at its thickest point. The piece weighs about 8.3 ounces.
• Maker: Coseley Brass Foundry.
• Marks: Marked "CBF" in raised lettering on both handles on the inside and with the word "ENGLAND"" on one side.
• Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Just a very interesting and unusual cast brass nutcracker to add to your collection.
• Condition: The nutcracker is very good condition with no breaks or repairs. The piece has a nice age patina, but also has remnants of cleaning agent suggesting someone attempted to clean it and did not do a good job. The pie has wear to the images and inscription suggesting that it is of old vintage, see the face of Shakespeare where most of the details are smoothed out. It also has several minor surface scratches and a few minor stained spots. The nutcracker works very well. It is all original and has developed a nice age patina. The piece could possibly be cleaned to bring it to its initial shiny brass look but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photo for additional condition information.
