For your consideration, an original circa 1940-1959 vintage blackand white silver gelatin photograph by the noted 20th century Americanphotographer Wendell MacRae (1896-1980). Entitled, “When Johnny Comes MarchingHome” the work features a singing dancer in motion, presumably a stage play ormodern dance company performance (Martha Graham Co.?) staged for thephotographer. The print is rich in tonality and detail. The work is in good vintage condition and measures9 ¼” x 7”, framed 14 ½” x 11 ½”. Signed by on the matt in pencil “WendellMacRoe, N.Y.”. A very rare work, museum grade.

Likemany of his contemporaries of the late 1920\'s and early 30\'s the photographerWendell MacRae saw a hushed beauty in machinery and lovely geometries insunlight and shadow on Manhattan skyscraper facades. Unlike such artists asMargaret Bourke-White or Ralph Steiner, MacRae didn\'t seem as intent on showingthe majestically or coldly beautiful. Instead, in his elegant photographs,whether they\'re of hand tools or factories or cityscapes, he seldom lost sightof a gentle human component.
