History:

The **Hungnam evacuation**, also known as the **Heungnam redeployment**, took place during the Korean War between 15 and 24 December 1950. It was a remarkable operation that involved the evacuation of **United Nations (UN) forces** and **North Korean civilians** from the port of **Hungnam**, located in Hamhung, North Korea.

Background: On 8 December 1950**, US X Corps commander **General Edward Almond** received an order from **UN Commander General Douglas MacArthur** to evacuate X Corps through Hungnam. Prior to this, the decision had been made to concentrate X Corps forces at Hungnam. The evacuation of **Wonsan** had already begun on 3 December, and without interference from the People's Volunteer Army (PVA) or the **Korean People's Army (KPA), troops and civilians were loaded onto transport ships and LSTs** (Landing Ship, Tank).

The evacuation included 3,800 troops, 1,100 vehicles, 10,000 tons of cargo, and 7,000 refugees.

One LST sailed north to Hungnam, while the remaining ships headed for **Pusan**. Additionally, ships dispatched to **Songjin** picked up South Korean troops and refugees. The original plan was to assist X Corps' concentration at Hungnam, but the order to evacuate changed the destination for most South Koreans to Pusan

This operation, also known as the **Miracle of Christmas**, successfully facilitated the withdrawal of UN forces and civilians from a precarious situation. The scale and coordination of the evacuation were truly remarkable, especially considering the challenging circumstances of war.
