·The legend of St. Christopher attributed to themedal often worn by Catholics or Orthodox Christians is the story of a tall, robust man who once served a great king. Seeing the king cross himself at themention of the devil, Christopher left his service to seek out Satan, who wasobviously stronger than the king who feared him. Christopher found a band ofcriminals, and among them was a man who claimed to be the devil. Christopheroffered his services to the man but not for long because soon the devil was seenavoiding a cross. Christopher realized that the devil feared Christ, so he lefthis service and came upon a hermit in prayer. The hermit told Christopher thatin order to serve Jesus he could pray and fast, but Christopher did not thinkthis would suit him. As an alternative, the hermit suggested that because ofhis size Christopher might do well helping people across a dangerous river. This Christopher did for some time. One day a small child arrived to be carriedacross. Christopher took the child upon his shoulders, and as he crossed theriver, the child grew heavier until Christopher was almost unable to carry himand feared he would drown. When he asked the child why he was so heavy, thechild revealed himself as Jesus Christ. He replied that he was heavy with theweight of the world\'s sins. Christopher successfully got the Christ childacross the water and was rewarded by having his staff turned into a tree. He isconsidered to be the patron saint and protector of all travelers.

The Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré is a major RomanCatholic place of pilgrimage and has a copy of Michelangelo\'s Pietà (theoriginal is in the St. Peter\'s Basilica in Rome). The basilica is also known asa place of miracles. One of the builders of the original church, Louis Guimont, helped build the church despite having severe scoliosis and needing the aid ofa crutch. When the church was complete, he was able to walk independently.Subsequent visitors to the church who have prayed have left their canes, crutches and walking aides behind as testament to their healing.
