This is a rare and stunning, Wedgwood black basalt Jasperware box, made as part of the Egyptian revival collection 1978/79.

The beautiful little pottery box has a matt stone finish synonymous with jasperware and is decorated with a gold gilded Sphinx . I believe it was intended as a candy box or trinket box but it has lots of modern uses.

Jasperwear is a type of fine-grained, unglazed stoneware introduced by the English potter Josiah Wedgwood in 1775. Its name derives from the fact that it resembles the natural stone jasper in its hardness.

This fine example is in fabulous condition with no chips, scratches or fading to the gilt and it even has its original box and packaging.

The box printing has faded a little over time and has some wear and tear (see pictures), but it's really nice to have an original box.

Measurements 8cm square.
