Sadly -- and surprisingly -- I could find no signature or date on this box. It\'s possible that it\'s \"camouflaged\" and I\'m just missing it, but I suspect it\'s simply unsigned. I\'m surprised because it\'s built and designed so well; I would think its maker would take a bow.
The box was my late sister Betsy\'s, who adored these and nesting boxes. She collected a good distance from our Pittsburgh birthplace (where she stayed), which gives me some reason to believe this could be a Betty MacLaren box. MacLaren painted a bunch of \"Ohio\" boxes, e.g. Wooster, which are all in reach of a Pittsburgh hunter. The house drawings, the exact style of fastening, the tiny nails and their particular location are all reminiscent, as well as the all-capital letters around the lid. Also very much the style of Mary C. Hubbard who I could find little about. Both women signed and even copyrighted their pieces, though, so I have to define this as by an unknown folk artist.
The piece is unpainted inside and the bottom is some sort of composite wood. All the wood -- you might recognize the grain -- is 3/8\", which explains the solidity of the box.
