Signed letter to the Secretary of the Interior, forwarding Treasury Department documents.
Manuscript Letter Signed: \"Wm. A. Richardson.\" as Secretary of the Treasury, 1¼p, 8x10 lined paper, separate sheets. Washington, D.C., 1873 November 14. On letterhead of the Treasury Department to Honorable Columbus Delano, Secretary of the Interior. Begins: \"Sir\". In part: \"In accordance with Act of 5th Feby 1859, I transmit herewith Twelve (12) Boxes of Public Documents as per the following statement.\" The letter then lists nine of the twelve boxes and their contents, which include reports from the House of Representatives, committee reports and miscellaneous documents. The letter, which is missing its second page, ends: \"and Reports of Secretaries of Navy and Interior.\" Initialed by the secretary who wrote the letter at upper left margin of first page. WILLIAM ADAMS RICHARDSON (1821-1896) served as Grant\'s Secretary of the Treasury from March 17, 1873 to June 3, 1874. In his last months in office, he became embroiled in the \"Sanborn Incident\". John Sanborn, who was hired by Richardson under a congressional act to recover unpaid taxes, kept much of what he had collected. Congress investigated, and, although there was no evidence of direct involvement by Richardson, his removal was demanded. Grant responded by appointing Richardson to a position on the Massachusetts Court of Claims in 1874. Columbus Delano (1809-1896) had been appointed by President Grant to serve as Secretary of the Interior on November 1, 1870. Delano served until October 19, 1875, when he resigned. Delano had previously served in the Ohio state House of Representatives (1863) and was a Republican U.S. Representative from Ohio (1845-1847, 1865-1869) and Commissioner of Internal Revenue (1869-1870). Lightly creased and soiled. Ink smudged at 5 words on last page. Nicked at blank right margins. Pages, which had separated, are taped together at blank left margin of last page and verso of first page. Overall, fine condition.See more material from these signers:WILLIAM A.
