$75.00

Scarce and historic medal awarded to members of the 32nd Infantry Division on their return home from France. This medal was given by the mothers of the returning soldiers to them as a home coming gift. This medal appears to have possibly been silvered at some point but it has mostly worn off!

The 32nd Infantry Division was an iconic and one of the most combat serviced Division in the entire US army during World War One. Most members hailed from Wisconsin & Michigan. The unit was made up of 2 Infantry Brigades & 1 Artillery Brigade. Assigned Major General James Parker a famed Medal of Honor Recipient during the Philippine American War as their commanding officer. Later Brig General William Haan would take command when Parker was sent to France to command the 85th Infantry Division.

They would become famous for there courage and valor during the Battle of the Marne where they fought side by side w the French Foriegn Legion & 10th French Army, at the time two of the best units in the entire French army.

Later on they would be the first US troops to cross into Germany via combat patrols. They would later take park in the Meuse Argonne Offensive.

By the end the war they had fought in 3 major engagements, suffering a total of 13,261 casualties of which 2,250 were KIA & 11,011 were WIA. They had the 3rd highest casualty rate of all US Division who served in WW1. Also the Division was highly decorated w over 800 members being award individual gallantry and heroism medals from the US, France & Belgium. All four Infantry regiments, three artillery regiments & three machine battalion in the 32nd would receive the iconic French Croix De Guerre Medal. They would go on to serve occupation in Germany and would be inactivated on April 5th of 1919.

As you see an iconic and historic Division and a medal/ coin awarded to one of these heroic men!

The condition of the medal is pretty good it appears to have been silvered at some point but it has mostly worn off, it does have dark spots age and wear all what one would expect with a medal award near 105 years ago. The back states \" From the Mothers of the 32nd Division in appreciation of heroism and sacrifice June 6th 1919. A truly interesting and historic piece. It is a bit salty but still is a truly interesting medal!
