Original Imperial German Army 1885-1916 dress helmet plate (known as a wappen) for spiked helmets (known as Picklehaube). During this period, the American and European armies wore similar helmets with spikes of various sizes on the crown. This plate depicts the Prussian Eagle. Each state of Germany had their own distinct wappen, -Prussia of course had the Eagle. The banner across the wappen translates to: For God, King, and the Fatherland What makes this wappen rare is that the small ends are still intact. Typically the crown, orb cross, or baton are broken off. This wappen is in one piece with a nice minor pantina. The attachment prongs/loops are still present on the back of the shield. The German army wore the Picklehaube into the First World War until 1916, when the steel helmet (stahlhelm) came into service, as the Picklehaube did not protect against shrapnel or the dangers of modern war. This was obtained by me from an estate sale of a militaria collector in Berlin during my assignment there. Own a nice piece of military history that has come from Germany.
