WWII LETTER - PACIFIC ISLANDS - LIEUT. JIM COMSTOCK -RENOWNED W. VIRGINIA WRITER:
$65.00

We are offering a WWII Postal Cover & Letter, dated March 24, 1945, from Naval Lieut. Jim Comstock while serving on the Mariana Islands in the Pacific. The letter has a U.S. Airmail 6-cent stamp and a U.S. Navy March 27, 1945 postmark. It is stamped "Passed by Naval Censor". Although stationed in the Pacific, the return address is Lt. (JG) Jim Comstock, JCA - Navy 926, Box 32, FPO, San Francisco. Obviously, all incoming and outgoing mail for the soldiers stationed in the Pacific would have come through the San Francisco address where it would be examined and, if necessary, censored. **NOTE** - a little about Jim Comstock - during the war he decoded messages on the island of Guam. After the war, he became a writer, newspaper publisher and humorist. He founded the West Virginia Hillybilly, and over a 20-year period compiled a 51-volume encyclopedia of West Virginia history and culture, the "West Virginia Heritage Encyclopedia".
The letter is to Louise Countryman, Jordan Marsh Company, Executive Office, Boston. The lieutenant thanks her for "adopting me and thereby assuring me for the duration I will get to read Mr. Dahl's cartoons each week". [Francis Dahl, Boston Herald cartoonist] He praises her for her Boston sweetness and hospitality saying "You and your people are swell and know more of the essence of hospitality than any people I have met from Miami to Cambridge. And I, Ma'am, am a West Virginian who says it. If you feel inclined to drop a line when you send the Herald Midget, please do so......" "Should you have occasion to go to the Arlington Street Officer's Club, tell Miss Wells you have heard from me and tell her where I am. There, Ma'am, is a fine lady. Bostonian, yes!......"
The lieutenant made a drawing of structures and palm trees at the bottom. He writes "P. S. You might be interested in knowing there is a Sea Bee Camp with streets named for Boston thoroughfares". [In WWII, America's success depended upon the ability to complete construction projects under dangerous conditions. The U. S. Navy established the military's first Naval construction battalions (Sea Bees) under the direction of Naval officers from the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps.]
