He served in the Europe ETO with the 6th Air Force reaching the rank of Lt-Colonel, placed in command of the Liaison Pilots fighting with the Russian Airforce during WW2 on the Eastern Front.

Lt. Col. Hampton became Col. Hampton during his tours in World War II, very expeditiously, because of his bravery and initiative. His first assignment ended in his recommendation for the Air Medal issued by the U.S. Army Air Force of that time. His initial mission was first pilot in extremely dangerous Long-Range Reconnaissance Flight sorties in the First Bomber Group in the Caribbean out of the Panama Canal Zone under what would eventually be Sixth Air Force Command, in the Canal Protective Zone. These flights occurred in the unpressurized cabins of that day at night in any conditions, under blackout orders for the coast near the canal (so it was impossible to navigate by lighting at night) when Japanese operations would have been at their most advantageous strike timing or clandestine operations timing right after the attack of Dec 7th 1941 on Pearl Harbor. At that time endured at the initiation of wartime activities, to protect the essential supply route of the Panama Canal. Many of the ships that were used in the Pacific campaign were built on the East Coast in the Kaiser shipbuilding plants and ports and then were shipped through the Canal zone to war.

Lieut. Col. Hampton was transferred to the 8th Air Force in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) after his stint with the 6th Air Force where he made Lt Col and was placed in command of the Liason pilots fighting with the Russians on the eastern front. He was stationed in Russia, of the 8th AF which put Lt Col Hampton in Russia with his APO mail destination IN RUSSIA!

Post war, then Col Hampton was transferred to the 317th Air Transport Command station in postwar Germany. This is where one of the most amazing aspects of this grouping plays its part. By now Col. Thomas K Hampton commanded the 317th Air Transport Command’s mission to supply all food, medical, clothing and other essentials such as building material to the population of West Berlin during the Berlin Airlift of 1948 and 1949. As the Iron Curtain fell across Eastern Europe, surrounding Berlin in Russian East Germany, all supply lines via rail line were cut by the Russians to starve out the West Berliners and gain control of the territory. The allies, primarily the United States of course, said “no” and initiated the largest humanitarian airlift in history; Over 1000 tons A DAY.
