Original Washington Irving autograph letter, dated 1831. The famed author of \"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow\" and \"Rip Van Winkle,\" writes to decline a dinner invitation. It is addressed on the verso to John Murray, the celebrated publisher of Lord Byron, Jane Austen, and Sir Walter Scott, among others. The letter reads:
Argyll Street Monday Morng Apr. 1831 My Dear Sir, I am extremely sorry that a previous engagement prevents my having the pleasure of dining with you tomorrow Very truly yours Washington Irving
This letter is published in full with extensive notes detailing its provenance, in Ben H. McClary, ed., Washington Irving and the House of Murray: Geoffrey Crayon Charms the British, 1817-1856 (Knoxville: University of Tennessee, 1969), p. 148. (See photo)
The letter measures 7.25 x 4.5 inches, with integral address leaf on the verso. Traces of Irving\'s wax seal and some glue residue on verso; otherwise in fine condition (see photos). Archivally matted and presented with a handsome steel engraving of Irving by Alonzo Chappel, the whole measuring to an overall size of 13.5 x 17.5 inches.
