PRODUCT: likely OYSTERS AGE: circa 1860s - 1880s DESCRIPTION: STONEWARE OYSTER JUG. This is a SCARCE to RARE stoneware jug that has an extra wide opening, and is known as an oyster jug! We located this jug in the Norfolk, Virginia area, so this was a likely use for this jug. This crockjug is painted in a metallic brown slip / engobe. Although the company that purchase this jug is unknown -- it wouldhaveapplied a paper label to the jug -- the jug, itself, was likely manufactured by VIALL & MARKLE of Akron, Ohio. \"V&M\" is embossed on a bannerclub on one shoulder. Measures approx. 7-5/8\" high. Base diameter measures 5-3/4\". Opening measures 2\" in diameter. This a sturdy jug that likely holdsa half gallon. A great addition to your oystermen or stoneware or crockery collection! CONDITION DETAILS:NEAR MINT to MINT. Kiln scars around base edge and bottom circumference. Small bare spots on handle that painter missed before firing. No repairs, chips, cracks, fisheyes, pressure lines, pot stones or other damage. SHIPPING: UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE.
