This lot consists of two old New York Supreme Courtdocuments,dated 1837 and 1838, and with bothconcernedwith cases fromWarrenCounty.
In addition, all threedocuments concern cases thatwereheld in the court ofJudge Samuel Nelson, whoat thattime wasChief Justice ofthe New York Supreme Court.
Samuel Nelson(1792-1873) had a long judicialcareer,which concluded in a stint of twenty-seven yearsas ajusticeon the United States Supreme Court, from1845 to 1872.
Nelson was one of the seven justices whoconcurred onthe notorious 1857Dred Scott decision,although he didso for reasons different from Chief Justice Roger Taney\'s.One of the documents is four pages long; that is,it is composed of two sheets of paper, which arewritten on both sides. The other document is sixpageslong (three sheets).
These documents are handwritten and signed bya court clerk. They MIGHT alsobe signed by afewof thepeople involved with the case.The documents are about 13\" by 8\".They are in good condition, with creases
where they have been folded, light browning, and some general wear.These documents would be a great additionto the collectionof any local historian fromWarren County, New York.
