Up for sale is apre-WWI Era US ArmyPattern 1908 Aluminum Mess or Soldiers Drinking Cup. The cup is marked US onthe handle. The cupis made fromAluminum with a rolled lip. The handle is attached with insulators to prevent the handle from heating up. The cup is approximately5\" in diameter and2 5/8\" tall. It is used, seephoto\'s for condition.No dents or rust. A few minor abrasions in the aluminum seephoto\'s.It is in Nice Condition for it\'s age. These transitional cups are very hard to find. Only made for a couple of years, in very limited quantities.

In the early part of the twentieth century, during the process of reviewing the equipment for use with the new M-1903 rifle, the Army experimented with a number of different patterns and material for cups. In 1903 graniteware enameling, popular with civilian kitchen items, was examined and found to be poisonous with acidic foods. In 1908 a shallow aluminum cup with insulation between the handle and the body of the cup was field tested. The new cup had promise but was overcome by events when the Equipment Board of 1909 went in a completely new direction, adoptinga combination canteenw/fitted cup and cover.
