During the 18th and 19th centuries, well-to-doPatrons embarked on a rite of passage called the Grand Tour to explore the richhistory, art, culture, and architecture of Europe. Travelers typically embarkedon a circuit through major European cities such as Paris, France.The Palais Royal was not only the historical and cultural center ofParis, but also housed boutiques where visitors could find unique itemsthat served as treasured mementos of their travels. Today, these 18th-centuryantique pieces evoke a timeless sense of bygone nostalgia from the GrandTour era and are still sought after by discerning collectors.

French pastries were an art form, and anabsolute must for travelers to sample a French pastry delicacy. Pate a la Rose pastryand Mouches à la Reine French pastry delicacies gained popularity duringthe 18th century, was served in the Palais Royal French Royal Court, and was afavorite dessert among the aristocracy at elegant banquets and soirées. PATE ALA ROSE translates into ROSE PASTRY. 18th c. French rose pastries are unique, suchas a rose-colored tart Praline Roses from Lyon. Brioche Praline Rose is apastry sprinkled with candied nuts soaked in rose syrup.

Although this piece appears unmarked (seeremnants of a tag on the bottom), this piece is nearly identical to anotherpiece with the Maker mark VP for the Veuve Perrin Factory in Marseille, France.It is believed that Marked pieces were made for export, and unmarked pieceswere for domestic use. These Faïence wares is a type of tin-glazed and enameledearthenware known for its naturalistic polychrome decorations employingthe petit feu technique involving firing the clay body before glazing,decorating with metallic oxides, followed by a second firing at a lowertemperature for greater precision in painting techniques and a variety ofcolors featuring flowers, and gained popularity among elite patrons in theseventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Although French faïence was consideredmore provincial than porcelain, it was used at the court of LouisXIV for elaborate meals and display.

This handmade mushroom shaped piece has adomed top that is about 2 1/2” in diameter and tapers towards the 1 3/4 “diameter base. Weight is 3.7 ounces or 107 grams.  The base is made from copper and fired in akiln before and after the hand painted floral patterns of a Rose and otherflowers and leaves motif on the front and small flowers on the back side. Thetop of the base and the loop holding the domed top both have 3 grooved copperrings with a 3-prong hinge at the rear without a front lid closure. The top hasa burgundy border with the inscription PATE A LA ROSE, suggesting the purchaserhas a memento after sampling the renowned Rose Pastry, favored by the FrenchRoyal Court. As expected, the bottom base shows wear.
