Le Rire(French:[lə ʁiʁ], "Laughter") was a successful French humormagazinepublished from October 1894 until its final issue in April 1971. Founded in Paris during theBelle ÉpoquebyFelix Juven,Le Rireappeared as typical Parisians began to achieve more education, income and leisure time. Interest in the arts, culture and politics intensified during theGay Nineties. Publications like this helped satisfy such curiosity. It was the most successful of all the "Journaux Humoristiques."

TheDreyfus Affairoccurred in 1894 andLe Rirewas one of many publications to tap anti-Republican sentiment in wake of that scandal. It was a time in whichFrench governancewas frequently characterized by corruption and mismanagement. Government ministers and military officials became frequent targets.

The satirical journal was filled with excellent drawings by prominent artists. It featured full-pagechromotypographson both covers and in the centerfold. Many of these pieces are now highly desirablecollectibles. The most prominent contributor wasThéophile Steinlen. His illustrations were bitingcaricaturesof the political "jackasses" of the day. Illustrations were contributed by well-known artists such asHenri de Toulouse-Lautrec,Georges Goursat,René Georges Hermann-Paul,Juan Gris,Lucien Metivet, Georges Meunier,Jean-Louis Forain,Adolphe Willette,Joaquín Xaudaró,Leonetto Cappiello,Albert Guillaume,Manuel Luque,Jules Grandjouan,Abel Faivre,[1]andJules-Alexandre Grun.

During themusic hallera, cabarets and cafes were crowded with personalities and Parisians could catch glimpses of the stars of the day.Le Rirewas there to capture scene for its readers. Its pages depicted the likes ofYvette Guilbert,Polaire,Jane Avril,Réjaneand even those of popular visitors to the theaters such asSéverine.

Early life and work[edit]

Jules Abel Faivre was born inLyon, France. He attendedÉcole nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon[1]for three years. He then attended theSociété Nationale des Beaux-ArtsandAcadémie Julian.[2]He was a member of theSociété des Artistes Français. He lived inLa Croix-Valmer. Professionally, he createdpropaganda postersfor theFrench Army in World War I. He drew comics forLe Rire,L'Écho de Paris, andLe Figaro.[3]

Later life and legacy[edit]

Faivre died in August, 1945, inNice, France. A boulevard is named after Faivre in La Croix-Valmer.[citation needed]His work is held in the collections of theNational Library of Medicine, theUniversity of Michigan, theMuseum of Modern Art. and theBrooklyn style="margin: 0.3em 0px 0px 1.6em; padding: 0px; list-style-image: style="margin-bottom: 0.1em;">Musée d'Orsay,La Femme à l'éventail,[8]Nature morte à l'aiguière et aux fruits[9]
