Item Description:I am pleased to offer this original hand-made heirloom Japanese army officer’s Samurai sword from World War 2. Theblade represents the opportunity to own a historic Shinto katana, ca. 1600’s, by the very famous swordsmith Yamato Yoshimichi in exceptional Kyu Gunto mounts with a familymon. The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. The sword has a blade length of 26.75inches (68cm). It shows a well-grained itamehada. The hamon is an exceptional Mishina-style sudare-ba full of complex formations and hataraki. The hamon is present the length of the blade ending in athick mishina boshi. There are manyactivities like sunagashiand yubashiri in and along a refined hamon featuring multiple layers ofcopious nie.

The tang is signed Yamatono Kami Yoshimichi and is suriage,or shortened. Yamato Yoshimichi wasone of a long line of very highly regarded swordsmiths working in Kyoto andOsaka from the 1600’s into the 1800’s as part of the Mishina school. TheYoshimichi swordsmiths were particularly famous for their sudare-bahamon. A shinsa could be consulted as final authority, but the workmanship ishigh quality and clearly from this swordsmith. He was ranked Chu Jo Saku byFujishiro, and Yoshimichi work has been highly desired by samurai andcollectors for hundreds of years.

The mountings are Russo-Japanese war era Kyu Gunto and are in Near MINT condition. The tsukais saber-shaped with all of the wire wraps present. The tsuka also shows a family mon along the backstrap. The monis the famous takanoha, or hawkfeathers, used by clans such as the Abe.The saya (scabbard) is plated metal with a leather weather cover. The leatherweathering cover is in excellent condition, retaining 90-95% original finish. The saya itself is expected to be in NearMINT condition. There is a locking mechanism present. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are nonicks, little to no rust, and just a few small scattered scratches along theblades length. There are no major flaws like hagire.

Given the history, craftsmanship, reputation of the sworsmith, and the condition,I think this piece would be an outstanding addition for a collector ofWW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
