During the 18th and 19th centuries, well-to-doPatrons embarked on a rite of passage called the Grand Tour to explore the richhistory, art, culture, and architecture of Europe. Travelers typically embarkedon a circuit through major European cities such as Paris, France.The Palais Royal was not only the historical and cultural center ofParis, but also housed boutiques where visitors could find unique itemsthat served as treasured mementos of their travels. Today, these 18th-centuryantique pieces evoke a timeless sense of bygone nostalgia from the GrandTour era and are still sought after by discerning collectors.

French pastries were an art form, and anabsolute must for travelers to sample a French pastry delicacy. Classic French pastrysuch as Mouches à la Reine and Pate a la Rose pastry delicacies gained popularityduring the 18th century, was served in the Palais Royal French Royal Court, andwas a favorite dessert among the aristocracy at elegant banquets and soirées.

Mouches à la Reine translates to soulpatch for the Queen. Despite its whimsical name, Mouches à la Reine was a classicFrench pastry and a favorite dessert among the aristocracy and Elites of theFrench Royal Court during the 18th century. The association with royalty andthe French Queen Marie Antoinette, known for her extravagant tastes during hertime at the Palace of Versailles, added to the allure of this dessert.

The Veuve Perrin Factory in Marseille,France (VP mark) produced Faïence wares’, a type of tin-glazed and enameledearthenware from 1748 to 1803 was known for its naturalistic polychromedecorations employing the petit feu technique involving firing theclay body before glazing, decorating with metallic oxides, followed by a secondfiring at a lower temperature for greater precision in painting techniques anda variety of colors featuring flowers, and gained popularity among elitepatrons in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Although Frenchfaïence was considered more provincial than porcelain, it was used at the courtof Louis XIV for elaborate meals and display. One notable piece fromthe Veuve Perrin Factory is part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’scollection.

This handmade mushroom shaped piece has adomed top that is about 2 5/8” in diameter and tapers towards the 1 7/8 “diameter base. Weight is 3.5 ounces or 99 grams. The base is made from copperand fired in a kiln before and after the hand painted floral patterns of a redRose and yellow & blue flowers with leaves motif on the front and blue andyellow flowers on back side. The top of the base and the loop holding the domedtop both have 3 grooved copper rings and a 3-prong hinge at the rear with a Fleurde Lis’ front lid closure. The top has a burgundy border with the inscription Mouchesa’ la Reine, suggesting the purchaser has a memento after sampling the renownedpastry for the Queen, favored by the French Royal Court. As expected, thebottom base shows edge chips and wear.
