US REP. AMASA WALKER: RARE CIVIL WAR TRACT AND CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH

CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH AND 8-PAGE CIVIL WAR TRACT.HON. AMASA AND FREMAN[sic] WALKER. CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH OF AMASA AND FREEMAN WALKER. (Boston, MA): (Marshall & Chute), [circa 1863]. Original cabinet card photograph of Amasa Walker, and his brother, Freeman Walker. Albumen silver print photograph (c.5.5 x 4 inches), on original cardstock mount (photographer’s imprint on verso, circa 6.5 x 4.25 inches), period ink caption in lower margin of mount: “Hon. Amasa and Freman[sic] Walker” [i.e. Freeman Walker]. Very good condition, with old glue and paper residue on verso. The image is sharp, and all the more interesting in that it was found with his Civil War tract, arguing, in part, for funding the war through the National Debt. Also, if it wasn’t identified, one might think it were trick photography, given the brothers’ resemblance.TOGETHER WITH:THE NATIONAL FINANCES. SPEECH OF HON. AMASA WALKER, OF MASSACHUSETTS. DELIVERED IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, JANUARY 15, 1863. [Washington, DC]: ([L.] Towers, Printer), 1863. First edition. Printed self-wrappers, 8 pages [staples perished]. Modern owner’s ink name in upper margin of title leaf. Quite soiled, stained, worn, chipping on spine (staples perished), &c.

Amasa Walker (1799-1875) was an American Statesman and economist, and served in the US House Representatives during the Civil War. He was active in the anti-slavery, temperance, and suffrage movements, in addition to helping found The Free Soil Party in 1848. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1849 and 1860, in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1850, as Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth 1851–1853, and in the United States House of Representatives 1862–1863. In 1853, he was chosen as a member of the convention for revising the state constitution, becoming the chairman of the committee on suffrage. In 1860, he was chosen as a member of the electoral college of Massachusetts and cast his ballot for Abraham Lincoln. He was a delegate to the first International Peace Congress in London of 1843, and he served at the Paris Congress in 1849. His brother, Freeman Walker (1803-1883) was a prominent citizen of Worcester County, Massachusetts [wiki].
