Here is an ORIGINAL Civil War UNION document where as 1st Lt. AMBROSE HODGE (1829-1913) of the 4th Iowa Cavalry unit was receiving his salary from his military service from March 1st -to- March 31st, 1864. This document shows his military earnings as $122.11 (after $2.27 in U.S. Taxes) - photo # 7.
Photo # 3 shows: He was shows that he was awarded "detached service" while in Hebron, Mississippi.
This document is signed twice by 1st Lt. Hodges ( see photos #3 & #8 ).
Also shown here: "DESCRIPTION OF SERVANTS" - 1st Lt. Hodges had a "colored" gentleman named Billy that help him during his military service to the U. S. Union Army. Top illustrations (images #5 & #7) show that "Billy" was issued $12.00 per month.

***** Protective shipment here is $2.85 to all U. S. States Lt. AMBROSE HODGEAmbrose Hodge was 31, and living in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. "H" of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 18, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861.

Hodge was promoted to Quartermaster-Sergeant 3d Batt., Jan. 15, 1862, and so served until June, 1862. Received commission as 2nd Lieutenant of Co. L, July 22, 1862, to date Jan. 9, 1862; promoted Adjutant of the regiment on July 30, 1863; promoted to Captain of Co. K on Jan. 25, 1865. His commission being delayed in transmission, he was not mustered in as Captain until June 11, 1865. Mustered out with Company on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta.

Was detached for duty in Engineer Dept, Army of the Southwest in June, 1862 ; as Aide on staff of Gen. S. R. Curtis, July 23, 1862, and continued in Engineer Dept; remained on staff of Gen. Curtis when he took command, at St. Louis, Mo., of Dept of the Missouri; on this service till Sept, 1863, when assumed duty as Adjutant of regiment.

Then detached as A. A. A. G. on staff of Col. E. F. Winslow, commanding Cavalry Forces 15th Army Corps, later Cavalry Forces 17th Army Corps, later 2d Brig., Cav. Div. 16th Army Corps, later 2d Div. Cav. Corps, District West Tenn., and later 1st Brig., 4th Div., Cav. Corps Mil. Div. of the Miss., this last service continuing to the end of the war.

Promoted as Brevet Major "for long and valuable services as A. A. A. General and for gallantry in the presence of the enemy at Big Blue, Mo., Oxford and Tupelo, Miss., Selma, Ala., and Columbus, Ga."
