Lot of 5 1865-1869 Civil War Era and Post-Civil War Era Bank Checks from the First National Bank of Troy New York. The checks were written and signed by Charles Williams. Each one has the 2 cent George Washington U.S. Internal Revenue stamp on it.1. March 1, 1865, Pay to Samuel Pierce. Pierce was an inventor and seller of kitchen stoves, ranges, accessories, as well as heating stoves. He moved to a farm near Troy NY in 1845. Names on back of check include: B.M. Hadkins, Joseph Beach, Sam Pierce, D. Bennett.2. June 30, 1865, Pay to Williams & Whittlesey. Names on back: Williams & Whittlesley, C.M. Wellington.3. May 4, 1866, Pay to John Ross. Names on back: John Ross, R.H. Truman.4. May 19, 1866, Pay to Williams & Whittlesey. Names on back: Williams & Whittlesey, G.Sims.5. January 18, 1869, Pay to R.C.R. Chase of Au Sable New York. Names on back: R.C.R. Chase, G.H. Perry.
The checks do have spindle holes in them as was typical of the time. Nice ornate graphics.
