Rich tonal image shows some light aging spots, bottom edge trimmed, edges/corners bumped/rubbed, penciled/penned notations on verso, photo service stamp on common CDV portrait of the French opera singer Marie Amée (1852-1887) shown at a somewhat younger age. Known mostly for her opera-bouffes performances in the 1870s, she was unable to rekindle her career when this form of performance lost popularity. She died young at 35 from cancer. This view is a variant of some more common views by Sarony at the same sitting.

Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896) began in New York working for Nathaniel Currier in 1839 until he was able to open his own lithographic shop in 1843. In 1858 he traveled to Europe to formalize his training where he apprenticed with his photographer brother, Oliver Francois Xavier Sarony, in Scarborough, England. He partnered and worked with several other British photographers before returning to New York to open his own studio in 1866. From that point on, Sarony became one of the most important portrait photographers of the era alleged to have taken over 30,000 portraits of the notables of the day amassing over 500,000 negatives total with a concentration for theatre personalities. The firm continued on under the direction of his son Otto following his death in 1896).
