Description Moscow is the largest city and capital of the Russian Federation. Saint Petersburg, which was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, is the second largest city and served as Russia\'s capital for most of the period between 1713-1918; with the Communist revolution and rise to power, the capital was moved back to Moscow in 1918.
As the two most important cities in Russia, it was natural that they be connected by a railroad. Tsar Nicolas I, who ruled Russia from 1825 to 1855, commissioned the construction of a rail line between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. It was built mostly by serfs at a considerable loss of life but opened in 1851 after 10 years of construction. The line, some 403-miles long, was at the time the longest double-tracked railroad in the world. This route became known as the \"Nicolas Railroad\". The railroad was financed by a combination of government and private capital, which much of the private money coming from investors in Western Europe, particularly France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Much of the \"Nicolas Railroad\" was destroyed during World War II. It was subsequently rebuilt and has been upgraded several times since and is one of the busiest rail lines in Russia, carrying both freight and passengers. The fastest trains travel between these 2 cities in under four hours.
For sale is a fantastic and very rare item - a bond certificate from the \"Nicolas Railroad\"; it is dated 1869. The bond, on which language is French, English, and Russian, was for 500 French Francs or 125 Russian Roubles. Some 555,000 such bonds were issued and were due in 1951, paying 4% interest.
The bond measures appx 15x12 inches and is printed on a higher-quality paperstock. The bond is too large to show in one image, so the first two images show the front and the last two images show the back. With the bond, but not attached, is a sheet with 10 bond payment coupons; this sheet measures appx 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches; these coupons run from 1917-1922; the bond states that a new sheet of interest coupons will be issued when the included one has been used. The back of the bond summarizes the bond terms in both French and English and includes amortization tables. With the Communist takeover of Russia, the bond became worthless as an investment, and investors lost their capital amount. Also, no further interest payments were made.
This bond and bond coupons, which are now over 150 years old, are in very good condition. All writing/markings are from their issuance and processing. There are no rips or tears. The bond has been folded and shows minor soiling and wear. Rubber-stamped on the front are official stamps indicating payment of taxes and approvals.
This is a great item for any collector of foreign railroad memorabilia or Russian history items.
