1873 Rare New Orleans Magazine - The Young Pilot - 1st publication by Hansell:
$200.00

A rare New Orleans newspaper containing 4 pages plus a 2 page illustrated supplement not attached to the magazine. It is 8vo (6\" x 9 1/2\") and was published by F. F. Hansell, S.. L. Gilmore and J. F. Waldo who were its editors and owners.. The magazine describes itself as \"an amateur paper that is going like hot cakes...\". The paper has a Scientific Department section which includes an interesting article on creation; local news and articles written for the magazine plus local ads. It is in Very Good condition.
F. F. (Frederick Forde) Hansell was born in January of 1858 or 1859, so he was indeed Young when this magazine was created. By 1877 he had established himself in the publishing and printing business at 30 Camp Street under his name. He was very successful to the extent that he purchased \"The Columns\" a mansion on St. Charles Blvd. and was also able to take his brother Morris into the business with him. In 1889 the firm moved to quarters at 94 & 96 Canal Street and by 1900 they were in a palatial 5 story building located at 714-715 Canal Street. During his career Hansell published Louisiana Law Books, children\'s books, books authored by the noted Lafcadion Hearn and many other diverse books, pamphlets, postcards, maps and other printed matter.
I have no information on the other owners, S. L. Gilmore and J. F. Waldo except that a J. Y. Gilmore had a printing business at 6 Camp Street and was active in New Orleans and New Iberia in 1870 and so was a J. Curtiss Waldo who was business manager for Southern Publishing and Advertising located at 122 Camp Street. This magazine is not listed in OCLC.This magazine was perhaps the first venture into publishing by one of the most successful and enduring publisher/printers in the history of New Orleans.
