Philadelphia, publ. Frank Leslie NYC, Full-page illustrations- building the Japanese Pavilion, the Customs House, inspecting Japanese goods etc.

Item 483554-6 ◊ 1876 One Leaf From the Historical Register, Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, PA-pages 63-64

Unique and fascinating \"1876 One Leaf From the Historical Register, Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, PA-pages 63-64.\"    The original newspaper was published by Frank Leslie, 1876, New York.   It measures approximately 16\" x 11-1/4\" (≈40.5 cm. X 28.7 cm.)

Offered here is one leaf (pages 63-64) of this \"Historical Register Newspaper.  (Unfortunately we do not have the whole Register, but we will be offering several pages of it over the next few weeks.    This register was crammed with some of the most large and beautiful illustrations you\'ve ever seen.   This was something, for which Frank Leslie\'s organization was renown.

On page 64 you can see an almost full-page illustration, as the Japanese builders lay the foundations for the Japanese Pavilion. It is very large, and quite striking. We\'re not sure exactly what building technique they\'re using, but it is quite interesting. On this page they also talk about the judges pavilion, which was used for the judges and committees, which awarded prizes at the Centennial Celebration.

On page 63 we see another large illustration showing the Customs House and the officials who are inspecting the Japanese goods, which were being brought in for the Exposition. \"Yes,\" even goods brought in for the Exposition were subject to custom duties. In addition there are numerous interesting articles including the 1875 Fourth of July Celebration. The people in Philadelphia really know how to celebrate the Fourth of July!  Another article tells about the statute of William Penn, which is made of bronze and 30 feet high, And which was to become a permanent fixture in Philadelphia during and after the expedition.

There\'s an article about a statue called Water Babies, being brought in from Florence, Italy.   And another article about the Brazilian Commission and what they are doing to prepare for the expedition.

The 1876 Centennial Exhibition was the first great gathering of machine tool builders and assembly equipment vendors in the United States.  It featured more than 30,000 exhibitors spread out in 190 buildings on a 256-acre site. Almost 10 million visitors (the U.S. population at the time was only 46 million) from around the world attended

We all know that there was an industrial revolution going on.  And in the USA research was taking place in every field.  Historians claim the Philadelphia fair transformed the global image of the United States. Before 1876, Europe had generally viewed the United States as an upstart country.

Mass-produced products on display included sewing machines, typewriters, stoves, lanterns and guns, plus horse-drawn wagons, carriages and agricultural equipment. Powerful dynamos, pumps and turbines also attracted oohs and aahs from the throngs of visitors.  One of the highlights of the fair was the first public showing of the arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty (the rest of the giant statue would not be completed in New York Harbor until 1886).

It featured the debut of the world\'s first monorail system, Alexander Graham Bell\'s, telephone, and Thomas Edison\'s telegraph system. The people who attended went home with hundreds of new ideas for new products and for making their factories run more efficiently.  Although the practical use of electricity had yet happened, Air compressors and air-powered tools were another new technology.

This outstanding two page leaf is in very good condition, and is very clean. However there is minor wear to the edges and corners.  Please see all of the photos above to confirm the contents and condition of this publication

A very rare and wonderful, \"1876 One Leaf From the Historical Register, Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, PA\" and a great addition to any collection!!
