1879 CABINET CARD PHOTO OF ENGRAVING: \"THE WOOING OF THE TWINS\", SOL EYTINGE JR.:
$75.00

Sepia toned cabinet card photograph of an engraving based on an illustration by Sol Eytinge that appeared in the May 11. 1878 issue of Harper\'s Weekly which was titled, \"Love in Blackville. The Wooing of the Twins\" drawn by Sol Eytinge Jr. (1833-1905). In the engraving that is shown on the card the title \"The Wooing of the Twins\" appears lightly in the foreground of the image. There are some differences in this image from the Harper\'s Weekly image but the cabinet card image is clearly based on and is a variation of that image.
The scene shows two black gentlemen flirting with two coy twins while the parents are nearby in another room keeping an eye on the goings on. The image depicts the participants in a racially stereotypical manner as was done at that time in so many publications.Sol Eytinge, Jr. was the illustrator of Dicken\'s A Christmas Carol (1869), Great Expectations (1867), Little Dorrit (1871) Our Mutual Friend (1870), The Personal History of David Copperfield (1867), A Tale of Two Cities (1867) and others. His Blackville series of comic illustrations gave readers of Harper\'s Weekly a regular supply of buffoonish portrayals of freedpeople. Printed on the back of the card is the photographer\'s information which was for Stevens & Redington Photographic Studio, 85 Madison St., Chicago which was at that address in Chicago in 1879.The card measures 6 7/16 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The condition of the card is excellent with good contrast and rich tones. There is a slight bump to one corner. Please examine the clear photos that we have provided & purchase based on your own opinion as to the condition of the cabinet photo. The reference number for this item is #5313.Shipping is free only to addresses within the U.S. The shipping quote to locations outside of the U.S. is an estimate and the actual cost may differ.
