1880’s to 1890’s Bill Holbert cabinet card. Holbert was born and died in Maryland. His MLB catching career was predominately played in the state of NY. Syracuse, Troy, Brooklyn and the Merrpolitans. Holbert holds the record for most career at bats without a home run. Home runs were rarer in Holbert’s era because of field dimensions and equipment. Card’s publisher is uncredited. Likely published in NY or Maryland. A little less than 5 by 7 inch in size. Stains, toning and wear. Feel free to ask questions. Ear width appears to be slightly different in the first compared images. As you can see in the images opposite shoulders are angled opposite in relation to the camera. Angles allow a photographer to hide or showcases unattractive or attractive features. Dumbo ears become just ears at the correct. Side profile images are likely hiding dumbo ears, odd nose, unsymmetrical eyes or ears, hairline. List goes on and on. Photographers were called artist in the old days. They very much were. Your goal as a photographer was to make the subject look attractive. You want the people the image is shown or given to want to come to your studio. They were professionals.
