Up for sale is a lovely copper kettle from the 18th century signed by coppersmith Philip Apple He was a noted artisan in West Chester, PA around 1826. The practice in the 18th century was to stamp the name of themaker on the top of the handle with an intaglio stamp. This piece shows partial signature, some worn away. Sometimes the die (stamp) imprinted only the name of the maker within a plain rectangle, while at other times the edges of the rectangle were ornamented with escallops or dots. Both are on this piece. The dies were made of steel and struck with a hammer while the underside of the handle was supported on an anvil. This procedure expanded the metal and made it slightly wider where it was struck, and the craftsman then had to file the excess away to make the handle uniform. Many marks are difficult to read (as here -see photo). Condition is "Used" dents and imperfections as pictured.
