French Line - A twenty-four page brochure from 1911 for CGT\'s \"One Class Cabin Steamers\" between Le Havre and New York.
The fleet consisted of the new ROCHAMBEAU (still at the shipyard awaiting completion), CHICAGO of 1908, NIAGARA of 1909, CAROLINE of 1908, FLORIDE of 1907, and the just-downgraded LA TOURAINE of 1891. French Line boasted that its One-Class clientele were \"teachers, lawyers, physicians and others ...a veritable aristocracy of intelligence.\"
Photos show the CHICAGO - a view at dock, Promenade Deck, Dining Room, Smoking Room, \"Lounging\" Room, Music Room, and a cabin. Also included are \"diminutive\" deck plans for ROCHAMBEAU, CHICAGO, LA TOURINE, and NIAGAGA.
Also of interest is a photo of the French Line\'s old Pier 57th in New York with its grand arch window. On the next page is a view of the Waiting Room at the other side of that window. Looks like quite a grand place. In 1947, years after the French Line vacated the premises, the pier was destroyed in a huge fire. It was rebuilt in the early 1950s for Grace Line, fell into disuse in the early 2000s, and was recently rebuilt by Google and reopened to the public.
